Toilet Talk: The Best Options for your Camper Van

Updated: Aug 13, 2022

Fun fact: The average person visits the toilet 2,500 times per year!

Fun fact #2: <<< see what I did there? Nearly 40,000 Americans are injured in toilets every year.

Remember the book "Everybody Poops"? Super awkward, but an unavoidable human dilemma. If you've made up your mind and want to live the van life, you definitely need to think about whether to include a toilet in your build, and which kind.

Composting Toilets

A composting toilet doesn’t use water for flushing. Instead of using water, it separates the liquids (#1) from the solids (#2) to prevent your waste from turning into sewage.

The liquids go into a bottle that can be dumped in a regular toilet or diluted and disposed of outside, and the solids get mixed in with peat moss or some other organic medium to dry them out, keep odor down, and start the decomposition process, which eventually turns it into compost. Once full, you empty it into a compostable bag and toss it in the trash.

No black tank means you don't have to dump smelly sewage from the holding tank in your camper van, using less fresh water allows you to go longer between fill ups, and they are eco-friendly.

Cassette Toilets

One of the biggest factors people consider when choosing the best toilet for their camper vans is that it is a permanent fixture, rather than a portable toilet.

They’re also more cost effective than composting travel toilets.

Unfortunately, cassette toilets are not eco-friendly like the composting toilet. You will need chemicals, and they are not always easy to find when you're on the road. They can also get pretty pricey. There is also the issue of finding a dumping station for your waste - not a fun task.
